The ancient city of Hattusa, the capital of the Hittite Empire, is one of the most important historical places in Turkey. Hattusa Ancient City was added to the World Heritage List in 1986, and the cuneiform clay tablets found here are now a part of the Memory of the World Register. An important tablet, currently on display at the Istanbul Archaeological Museum, details the terms of the peace agreement made after the Battle of Kadesh.
Trabzon was the capital of the Empire of Trebizond, which lived for more than 200 years until 1461. The city is worth seeing with the Sumela Monastery and Uzungol.
Rize is famous for its tea gardens and highlands. With an altitude of 2050 meters, Pokut Highland is one of the most beautiful of these highlands.
Another city with plenty of highlands in the region is Artvin. The city is home to natural beauties such as Hatila Valley National Park and Karagol-Sahara National Park.
