History of Uchisar

Uchisar’s rich history dates back to ancient times when its strategic location made it a well-populated and fortified area.

The Uchisar fortress served as a watchtower and a place of refuge during times of attacks and raids, providing safety to the village’s inhabitants. In fact, the first population census conducted in 1530 revealed a population of approximately 3,000 people.

The village’s historical dwellings trace their origins as far back as 2000 BC when people began carving into the soft rock formations of the region. Over time, they evolved into exquisite stone mansions, adorned with intricate patterns during the Ottoman period.

Today, some of these transformed mansions stand as charming hotels, inviting visitors to relish the authentic cave-living experience.
